Verbatim staff Race for Life
Nine members of Newbury’s Verbatim professional telephone answering service are lacing up their running shoes and pounding the pavements for a good cause.
Sunday 6 July will see the intrepid nine join 3000 other women at Newbury Showground to run the 5K “Race for Life” event, part of Cancer Research UK’s massive summer fundraising series.
“We’re all determined to actually run the 5 kilometers,” says Sarah Berrington, Verbatim’s Financial Controller. “I know it’s OK to walk it, but we all want to run the whole thing. That’s our main goal. We will do it, come what may!”
Most of the nine are new to running, whilst Receptionist Annie King has half-marathon experience behind her. Sarah, Annie and co have been spotted limbering up on various Newbury residential roads and around Thatcham Memorials as they tackle their training plans. Receptionist Carole Benham has been power-walking all over Newbury, accompanied by her husband, whilst other members of the team have been power-walking their children to school before work.

“We are finding the training a struggle at the moment”, confesses Sarah, “but it’s so nice to get out in the fresh air. The hardest bit is getting out of the front door; I never regret going!”
Cancer Research UK is a charity close to Verbatim’s heart. Receptionist Jackie Aukett was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a full mastectomy in 2006. Although she is now fully-recovered, the news had a big impact at the time on Verbatim’s close-knit team of long-term staff. They are hoping to raise to raise £2500 for breast cancer research by running the Race for Life and have also held a sweepstake on the birth date and weight of fellow Receptionist Jodie’s May baby. Jodie won’t be able to run the Race for Life herself, but the team wanted to include her in their plans. “After all,” Sarah points out, “she’s involved in an important race for life herself!”
